Chapter History
The Staked Plains Chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonists was organized October 16, 1963 with sixteen members. Mrs. L. A. Kerr was the Organizing Regent. The Charter, as well as the names of those original sixteen ladies, has been lost. The minutes for the early years are also missing. Thus, most of the history of this chapter is long gone.
The application papers for the members have also been lost. They were kept in the home of the Chapter Registrar, Mary McClurg. It has been said that in her later years she planned to turn them over to the current regent, but that never did happen. A few of the members made copies of their papers for the chapter files. It should be noted that as a Bicentennial Project the Chapter published in a bound book--The Ancestor Roster of the membership. This book is included in this collection.
In November 1991, when the Norman's Pride Chapter of Midland, Texas disbanded, ten members from that chapter transferred to the Staked Plains Chapter in Lubbock, Texas. Their names, membership numbers and ancestors are listed.
The Staked Plains Chapter has been represented at the state level. The State Regent for the Texas Society, Daughters of the American Colonists for 1973-1975 was Mrs. J. Sterling Crumpler (Thelma) of Lubbock, Texas. In 2015-2017 Mrs. Kenneth Douglas Webb (Barbara) served in that capacity.
About 2014, the chapter decided to have three meetings each year and they would be held jointly with the Kerenhappuch Norman Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century since many of the members belonged to both chapters.
